MyFoxTampaBay.com: DADE CITY - Like many high school students 14-year-old Harleme Larry was likely enjoying his summer vacation from Land O’ Lakes High School. But his summer was interrupted by Pasco County homicide detectives just after 11 o’clock Monday night, charging him with first degree murder.
---------------------------------
“It’s been awhile since there has been someone this young charged with such a serious crime,” said Kevin Doll, spokesman for the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators believe Larry is responsible for shooting and killing 31-year-old Agustine Hernandez around 1:40 a.m. Saturday.
---------------------------------
“That’s crazy, man,” said Albert Sanchez, who lives close to the crime scene. “A 14-year-old, that’s crazy, man.”
---------------------------------
Pasco County homicide detectives say the 14-year-old murder suspect had robbery on his mind.
---------------------------------
“He admitted to shooting this person for four dollars, that’s unfortunate,” Doll said.
---------------------------------
The age of the murder suspect was disturbing to people who live close to where Hernandez was shot. The motive and final take from the crime was even more difficult to deal with.
---------------------------------
“It don’t make no sense,” Linda Helton said as she walked by the spot where the shooting occurred. “You get out here and work. Why take something that somebody’s worked so hard to get? It just don’t make sense.”
---------------------------------
Investigators say Larry was armed with a .45 caliber handgun when he saw Hernandez standing along Oak Street in Dade City. The arrest report says Larry approached him, opened fire, and then ran home. The next morning, Larry told deputies he rode his bike to a lake where he claimed to have thrown the murder weapon.
---------------------------------
“It’s kind of scary,” said 16-year-old Claudia Lopez. The shooting happened right in front of her house. She was stunned to hear that the prime suspect is two years younger. “It happened right here by my house, wow, oh my God.”
